MEMORANDUM of participants of the first All-Russian Conference HIV/AIDS as it’s REFLECTED IN MASS MEDIA.

We, participants of the first All-Russian Conference hiv/aids as it’s Reflected in Mass Media. Open dialogue of Key Decision Makers of Russian Mass Media, Representatives of Civil Society and Health Care Institutions confirm our commitment to key principles of independent, quality, responsible, and socially-oriented journalism based on respect for the fact and the audience, on carefully checked, balanced, and accurate information on contemprary world, respect for the human being and personal dignity of protagonists of materials, as well as that of the readers, spectators, and radio listeners.
We acknowledge HIV/AIDS issue to be one of the most burning issues in contemporary Russian society which requires not only serious attention of mass media but also active collaboration of media organizations with governmental and civil society initiatives in the field of overcoming AIDS epidemic in Russia. We support governmental programmes of the Russian Federation aimed at solving this problem, and believe it to be important to regularly cover HIV/AIDS issue, including providing the audience with information on HIV prevention, access to treatment, rights of people living with HIV, and unacceptability of discrimination against them.
We confirm our commitment to the Code of Ethics of the Russian Journalist.
We consider it necessary to continue a wide discussion on responsibility of the work of mass media in the area in overcoming HIV/AIDS and other socially relevant diseases.
We commit to paying close attention to covering HIV/AIDS topic, participating in national information campaigns and facilitating raising awareness of our audience with regard to HIV prevention, access to treatment, rights of people living with HIV, as well as development of governmental programmes aimed at fighting the epidemic.
